🎣 Johnny Creek Baits Weekly Fishing Report: January 5, 2026 -January 11, 2026

Winter is officially in full send mode across the Motherlode. Creeks are flushing fresh water into the lakes, color is right, bait is moving, and there has been no shortage of fish anywhere you launch right now. If you’re willing to bundle up and put in the time, the payoff has been real.

Lake McClure

McClure has been steady and consistent, with bass spread throughout the lake. Fish are clearly feeding and willing to chase.

  • Top patterns: white soft swimbaits and mid-strolling minnows
  • Fish are relating to fresh water flow and transition areas, but you don’t need to overthink it—cover water and you’ll find them.

Lake Don Pedro

Don Pedro continues to pump out quality fish, and the key has been locating large schools of bait. Where the bait is stacked, the bass aren’t far behind.

Just before Christmas we had the opportunity to jump on Christian Ostrander’s boat, and it turned into one of those trips you remember. We got on fish early and often, and it was huge for helping us refine our new winged minnow coming this spring.

  • Getting it done: jigs, minnows, and swimbaits
  • If you’re graphing first and casting second, you’re doing it right.

New Melones

Melones is simply an absolute solid fishery right now. From finesse minnows to full-commitment glides, they’re biting—and biting well.
This lake is shaping up to be phenomenal all year, especially for anglers willing to lock down their boat access under the banding system. Less pressure, healthier fish, and consistent opportunities.

Winter fishing is firing across the Motherlode, and everything points to a big year ahead. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone soon at the International Sportsmen’s Expo—stop by, talk fishing, and get dialed for what’s coming next.
